Step one: Insulation & draughts
Stop paying to heat the outdoors
Heating and cooling are often the biggest slice of a home’s energy use. Insulation and draught sealing mean less of what you pay for leaks straight out.

Your goal
A high power bill comes down two ways: use less, and make your own. Most homes get more from the first than they expect – so start there, then make your own power.
This goal usually involves
Order matters. A house that uses less needs a smaller solar system, and that’s the cheaper one to buy.
The pathway
You don’t have to tackle everything at once. But sticking to this sequence means each later upgrade can be smaller and cheaper – even if you space them out over years.
Step one: Insulation & draughts
Heating and cooling are often the biggest slice of a home’s energy use. Insulation and draught sealing mean less of what you pay for leaks straight out.
Step two: Gas to electric
Hot water and heating use the most energy in many homes. Efficient electric versions use far less – and getting off gas completely ends a second daily supply charge.
Step three: Lighting and controls
Lights run every night of the year. LEDs use much less power for the same light, controls switch off what nobody’s using, and a monitor shows where the rest of your power goes.
Step four: Solar and batteries
Once the house uses less, solar can cover more of what’s left. Size the system to when you use power, and add a battery if you’re home in the evenings.

Not sure where to start?
Don’t waste money on upgrades you don’t need. A professional home energy assessment shows where your house loses heat and power, so your budget goes where it makes the biggest difference.
