Upgrade My Home

Your goal

Make my home warmer in winter

A freezing house is rarely just a heating problem – it’s a heat leakage problem. If you don’t trap the warmth first, you can end up paying for a bigger heater than your house should need. Seal the leaks first, so you can heat your home efficiently, cheaply, and quietly.

This goal usually involves

  1. Stop heat from escaping
  2. Target the coldest surfaces
  3. Heat it efficiently

Timing is everything. Upgrading your heater before stopping the leaks is like turning on the tap without putting the plug in the sink.

The pathway

Do it in this order.

You don’t have to tackle everything at once. But sticking to this sequence means each later upgrade can be smaller and cheaper – even if you space them out over years.

Step one: Insulation & draughts

Stop heat from escaping

This is your foundation. An uninsulated, draughty house loses warmth faster than a heater can replace it. If you don’t seal the leaks first, every heating quote you get will be sized for a house that can’t hold its temperature.

Step two: Windows and glazing

Target the coldest surfaces

Once your ceiling and draughts are sealed, single glazed windows are where much of the remaining heat escapes. Address these next, so your heating installer can size the system for the house you’ll actually have.

Step three: Gas to electric

Heat it efficiently

Now that your home is sealed and insulated, you may be able to downsize your heating system. A reverse cycle electric system is usually cheaper to run than gas – and it doubles as efficient cooling all summer.

Not sure where to start?

Stop guessing, start saving: find your home’s energy score.

Don’t waste money on upgrades you don’t need. A professional home energy assessment shows where your house loses heat and power, so your budget goes where it makes the biggest difference.
