uPVC double glazed windows
The warmest frame of the common options, and the quietest. A full replacement rather than a retrofit.

Single glazed windows are where a lot of your heating goes. Retrofit the windows you already have, or replace them properly – and start with the rooms that feel the worst.
A common sign
“The windows stream with water every winter morning.”
About Better windows and glazing
Glazing upgrades come in three kinds. Secondary glazing adds a second pane inside the window you already have. Retrofit double glazing swaps the single glass in your existing frames for a sealed unit of two panes. Double glazing replaces the whole window with one. Both cut heat loss and outside noise – they just cost very different amounts.
You don’t have to do every window at once. Start with the worst-facing rooms – usually the bedrooms and the living area you heat the most – and do the rest when the budget allows.
Cold rooms beside big windows
Condensation streaming down the glass
Traffic and street noise
Insulate the ceiling and seal the gaps before you glaze. It costs far less, and it shows you which rooms still need better windows.
Not sure what you need?
Look at the frames first. They decide most of the answer.

Not sure which one? Start with the problem you’re trying to solve, or find a specialist who can assess your home.

The warmest frame of the common options, and the quietest. A full replacement rather than a retrofit.

Slim frames with a thermal break. Common where the look of the original windows has to be kept.

Three panes for the coldest rooms and the noisiest roads. Rare in Australia and worth asking who has actually fitted it.

A second pane fitted inside the window you already have. Far cheaper than replacement, and it works on heritage frames.

Double glazed glass fitted into the frames you already have. The frames stay and only the glass changes.

Not every glazing job is double glazing. Rotten frames, jammed sashes and doors that never sealed properly.

Not sure where to start?
Don’t waste money on upgrades you don’t need. A professional home energy assessment shows where your house loses heat and power, so your budget goes where it makes the biggest difference.
