HOW WE ORDER RESULTS
How we decide which businesses you see first
We first show businesses that offer the upgrade you’re looking for and service your area. Matching businesses are then grouped by proximity and ordered by the quality and usefulness of their listing.
THE SHORT VERSION
We only include businesses that match the work and location. From there, proximity and listing quality determine the organic order.
Paid placement sits separately above those results and is clearly labelled.
01 - MATCHES THE WORK
The business must offer the specific upgrade being searched.
02 - SERVICES THE AREA
We only include businesses that genuinely cover that location.
03 - PROXIMITY AND LISTING QUALITY
Matching businesses are grouped by proximity, then ordered by the quality of the information available to homeowners.
04 - PAID STAYS SEPARATE
Premium Partners may also appear in a clearly labelled paid placement above the organic results.
If businesses are otherwise equally matched, we rotate their order fairly.
THE SAME RULES, EVERY SEARCH
How the order is worked out
No hand-sorting, no favours, no exceptions for the businesses we happen to like. Paying does not improve organic ranking at any step.
We start with the work you searched for
A business only enters the results if it offers the specific upgrade you’re looking for.
So, for example, a search for induction cooktops won’t show a business that only installs hot water systems.
DOES PAYMENT CHANGE THIS?
No.
WHY IT MATTERS
You should only see businesses that can actually do the work.
We check that they service your area
A business must genuinely service the location being searched before it can appear.
Claiming a larger service area does not move a business higher. It only changes which searches it may be eligible to appear in.
DOES PAYMENT CHANGE THIS?
No.
WHY IT MATTERS
A business shouldn’t gain an advantage simply by claiming a larger service area.
We consider proximity and listing quality
Matching businesses are grouped by how close they are to the search location. Within those groups, listings with clearer, more useful information are placed higher. That can include accurate business details, clearly listed services, service areas, useful business information and trust signals we can substantiate.
Premium-only features do not improve organic ranking.
DOES PAYMENT CHANGE THIS?
No.
WHY IT MATTERS
Closer businesses matter, but homeowners also need enough useful information to compare them properly.
Paid placement is separate, and labelled
Premium Partners may also appear in a separate, clearly labelled paid placement above the organic results.
That gives a business extra visibility, not a better organic position. Those businesses still appear in the ordinary results according to the same ranking principles as everyone else.
WHAT PAYMENT BUYS
Extra visibility in a clearly labelled paid placement, plus a richer listing and more ways for homeowners to enquire.
WHAT IT DOESN’T BUY
A higher organic ranking. That stays independent.
LISTING QUALITY
Paying doesn’t improve organic ranking.
Standard and Premium businesses are assessed using the same organic ranking factors. Premium-only features do not give a business extra ranking weight.
Some ranking signals come from information a business provides. Others come from public information or checks we perform.
WHAT DOES NOT IMPROVE ORGANIC RANKING
- Paying Upgrade My Home
- Premium-only features
- How much a business spends with us
- How long it has been a paying customer
- Anything said to us privately
SAME PRINCIPLES FOR EVERY BUSINESS
What we look for
Clear business information
Services, service areas, contact details, hours and a useful description of what the business does.
Trust signals you can check
Licences and accreditations the business lists, each linked to its official register so you can check it yourself, plus our Verified checks and public business history.
Useful information for homeowners
Photos and other details that help someone understand and compare the business.
If the method materially changes, we will update this page. Paying will never improve organic ranking.
WHEN BUSINESSES ARE EQUALLY MATCHED
No business permanently wins a tie.
If businesses are otherwise equally matched, we rotate their order rather than permanently favouring one.
The order is rebuilt each day, so it changes from one day to the next rather than staying fixed. That stops an arbitrary tie-break from permanently favouring one business.
EQUALLY MATCHED, ROTATED

IF YOU’RE A HOMEOWNER
The organic results aren’t for sale.
A business cannot pay to move higher in the ordinary search results.
Paid Premium Partner placement, when shown, sits separately above those results and is clearly labelled.
Premium may give you more information to assess a business, such as projects, team members and other listing features, but it does not buy a better organic position.
FOR BUSINESSES
Premium gives you more visibility and more ways to convert.
Your organic position stays independent. Premium adds clearly labelled paid placement above the results and gives homeowners more reasons to choose you once they find you.
For organic visibility, keep your listing accurate, useful and up to date, especially your services, genuine service areas and the information homeowners use to assess your business.
WHAT PREMIUM ADDS
Premium adds a richer listing with reviews, projects, team, finance options, more ways for a homeowner to get in touch, and more reasons for them to choose you.
COMMON QUESTIONS
Straight answers, including the awkward ones.
Can a business pay to rank first?
No. Paid Premium Partner placement is separate from the organic results and clearly labelled. Businesses cannot buy a higher organic position.
Is there bidding?
No. Businesses cannot bid against each other for organic ranking.
What does Premium actually change?
Premium does not buy a higher organic position. It gives your business clearly labelled paid placement above the results, a richer listing with more proof and detail, and more ways for homeowners to contact and enquire with you.
Do reviews affect ranking?
Google star rating itself does not determine ranking. Public review history can contribute as one of several trust signals.
What happens when businesses are equally matched?
We rotate their order so one business does not permanently hold the higher position.
Does a bigger service area rank a business higher?
No. It only changes which location searches the business may be eligible to appear in.
