Rebates and incentives available now

Current rebates, discounts and loans that may help with upgrade costs. Eligibility and amounts can change, so check the source before you act.

OPEN NSW

Energy Savings Scheme: hot water

No fixed amount A discount on a heat pump or solar hot water system. It is not paid to you: the installer applies it to the quote.

WHO MAY BE ELIGIBLE

NSW households, through a provider accredited under the scheme.

WORTH KNOWING

A specific dollar range for this circulates in search results and is not on any government page. If an installer quotes you a fixed rebate figure, ask them to show you where it comes from.

Source energy.nsw.gov.au Checked 14 October 2026
OPEN NSW

Home Energy Rating discount

$330 off A discount off the cost of a Home Energy Rating assessment, done in your home by an assessor accredited under NatHERS.

WHO MAY BE ELIGIBLE

Homeowners in New South Wales.

WORTH KNOWING

Ask the assessor for the total cost and whether travel or a later certificate revision costs extra, because the discount applies to the assessment rather than to whatever you decide to upgrade afterwards.

Source energy.nsw.gov.au Checked 14 October 2026
OPEN NSW

Zero-interest loan

Up to $15,000 A zero-interest loan for home energy upgrades, funded by the NSW Government and delivered by selected finance providers.

WHO MAY BE ELIGIBLE

Australian citizens or permanent residents with a combined annual taxable household income of up to $210,000.

WORTH KNOWING

It is a loan rather than a rebate, so it lowers the upfront cost and not the total cost.

Source energy.nsw.gov.au Checked 14 October 2026
OPEN NSW

Air conditioner upgrade incentive

Up to $560 A discount on an efficient air conditioner, applied by the installer rather than paid to you.

WHO MAY BE ELIGIBLE

NSW households, through a participating installer.

WORTH KNOWING

The figure moves with the size and efficiency of the unit, so treat these as the top of the range rather than what you will get.

Source energy.nsw.gov.au Checked 14 October 2026
OPEN NSW

Virtual power plant incentive

Varies by capacity An upfront payment for connecting a home battery to a virtual power plant, so your stored power can be drawn on by the grid.

WHO MAY BE ELIGIBLE

From 1 July 2026, batteries from 2 kWh up to 50 kWh. Batteries installed with the NSW battery discount are all eligible.

WORTH KNOWING

It stacks with the federal battery discount, so ask your installer to show both on the quote.

Source energy.nsw.gov.au Checked 6 October 2026
OPEN NSW

Solar for Apartment Residents

Co-funded A grant that co-funds shared rooftop solar on apartment buildings and other multi-unit dwellings.

WHO MAY BE ELIGIBLE

Owners corporations and strata managing agents apply, not individual residents.

WORTH KNOWING

Applications close at 5pm on 4 December 2026, or earlier if the funds are fully allocated.

Source energy.nsw.gov.au Checked 6 October 2026
OPEN AUSTRALIA-WIDE

Cheaper Home Batteries Program

Around 30% off An upfront discount on an eligible home battery, claimed by your installer and taken off the quote. It works with new or existing rooftop solar.

WHO MAY BE ELIGIBLE

Households installing a battery between 5 kWh and 100 kWh with new or existing solar. No income test. Support is paid on the first 50 kWh of usable capacity.

WORTH KNOWING

The rate steps down every six months until the program ends in 2030, so the same battery is worth less later in the year than earlier.

Source cer.gov.au Checked 6 October 2026
OPEN AUSTRALIA-WIDE

Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme

Certificates Certificates that your installer claims and takes off the installed price of rooftop solar, a battery, a solar water heater or a heat pump.

WHO MAY BE ELIGIBLE

Households anywhere in Australia installing an eligible system through an accredited installer.

WORTH KNOWING

It is almost always already inside the price you are quoted rather than something you claim afterwards. Ask for it to be shown as a separate line so you can see what it is worth.

What is changing in Victoria

Rules and requirements with a set date. Some only apply to rentals, new builds or when an appliance needs replacing.

1 October 2026 TRIGGERS: ON THE DATE
HOMEOWNERS AND RENTAL PROVIDERS EXISTING HOMES

Ceiling insulation discounts open to all eligible Victorian homes

The Victorian Energy Upgrades program opens ceiling insulation to all eligible Victorian homes, discounted through an accredited provider rather than paid to you.

WHAT YOU MAY NEED TO DO

Nothing is compulsory. If your ceiling is uninsulated or thin, this is the cheapest it is likely to be, and it is the upgrade that does the most for a cold house.

Source energy.vic.gov.au Checked 28 October 2026
1 January 2027 TRIGGERS: AT BUILD APPROVAL
NEW BUILDS ONLY HOMES NOT YET BUILT

Building a new home? It must be all-electric

All new homes, and most new non-industrial commercial buildings, must be built without a gas connection.

WHAT YOU MAY NEED TO DO

Nothing, if you already live in your home. If you are building or about to sign a build contract, ask your builder to confirm the design is all-electric for heating, cooling, hot water and cooking, and that it is priced that way.

Source energy.vic.gov.au Checked 6 October 2026
1 March 2027 TRIGGERS: WHEN IT FAILS
HOMEOWNERS AND RENTAL PROVIDERS EXISTING HOMES

When gas hot water fails, it usually cannot be replaced with gas

In an existing home, a gas hot water system that reaches the end of its life must, in most cases, be replaced with an efficient electric system rather than another gas one. For rented homes the rule covers heaters as well as hot water.

WHAT YOU MAY NEED TO DO

Nothing while your system is working. It is worth knowing what you would replace it with before it fails, because a hot water system usually fails without warning and that is a bad moment to be choosing.

Source energy.vic.gov.au Checked 6 October 2026
1 March 2027 TRIGGERS: AT A NEW LEASE
RENTAL PROVIDERS RENTED HOMES

Rentals will need ceiling insulation, efficient showerheads and cooling

Minimum standards add 4 star showerheads, cooling in the main living area, and R5.0 ceiling insulation where a ceiling has none.

WHAT YOU MAY NEED TO DO

If you rent out a property, check the ceiling insulation first. It is the item with the longest lead time and the one most likely to need work.

Source consumer.vic.gov.au Checked 6 October 2026
1 July 2027 TRIGGERS: AT A NEW LEASE
RENTAL PROVIDERS RENTED HOMES

Rentals will need draught sealing to doors, windows and wall vents

External doors, windows and wall vents must be draught sealed. Where there are gas appliances, a gas safety check comes first.

WHAT YOU MAY NEED TO DO

If you rent out a property, this is usually a same-day job and it pairs naturally with the March insulation work.

OPEN VIC

Solar Homes solar panel (PV) rebate

Up to $1,400 A rebate off the cost of a rooftop solar system, with the option of an interest-free loan for the same amount again.

WHO MAY BE ELIGIBLE

Combined household taxable income of all owners under $150,000 a year, property value under $3 million. Also available for homes under construction and for rental properties.

WORTH KNOWING

The income cap dropped from $210,000 to $150,000 on 1 July 2026, so a household that was eligible last year may not be now.

Source solar.vic.gov.au Checked 14 October 2026
OPEN VIC

Solar Homes hot water rebate

Up to $1,400 A rebate towards a heat pump or solar hot water system, which combines with the Victorian Energy Upgrades discount on the same job.

WHO MAY BE ELIGIBLE

Owner-occupiers, with combined household taxable income under $150,000 and property value under $3 million.

WORTH KNOWING

Figures in circulation of around $3,500 for heat pump hot water are wrong. With the Victorian Energy Upgrades discount on the same job, the two together reach up to $1,960 replacing a gas system, or up to $2,030 replacing an electric one.

Source solar.vic.gov.au Checked 14 October 2026
OPEN VIC

Solar for rentals

Up to $1,400 A rebate for rental providers putting solar on a rented home, with an optional matching interest-free loan.

WHO MAY BE ELIGIBLE

Renters must have a combined household taxable income under $150,000 and the property must be worth under $3 million. You and your renters both sign an agreement.

WORTH KNOWING

If you rent, you cannot apply for this yourself, but it is worth sending to whoever owns the property.

OPEN VIC

Solar for Apartments

Up to $2,800 A rebate for shared solar on apartment buildings, units and townhouses.

WHO MAY BE ELIGIBLE

For apartments, units and townhouses that share a building. Other eligibility conditions apply; Solar Victoria lists them.

WORTH KNOWING

It runs until 30 June 2027 or until the rebates are exhausted, whichever comes first.

OPEN VIC

Victorian Energy Upgrades (VEU)

Up to $5,530 A discount applied by an accredited provider on the job itself, not a payment to you. It covers heating and cooling, hot water, insulation, draught sealing and more.

WHO MAY BE ELIGIBLE

Victorian households and rental providers, through a provider accredited under the program.

WORTH KNOWING

There is no per-customer allocation and no quarterly cycle. Certificate values drift, they are not reserved for you, and anyone telling you to hurry because your allocation expires is inventing it.

Source energy.vic.gov.au Checked 28 October 2026
OPEN VIC

Victorian Energy Upgrades: glazing

$210 per 10m² A discount on double-glazed windows that replace single-glazed ones, applied by an accredited provider.

WHO MAY BE ELIGIBLE

Victorian households, through an accredited provider.

WORTH KNOWING

Be realistic about this one. A typical house has 20 to 30 square metres of glazing, so the discount is a few hundred dollars against a job costing many thousands. Decide on comfort, noise and staging rather than on the discount.
