About Home energy assessments
Measure first, spend second.
A home energy assessor walks through the house and checks where the heat and power go. Some use a blower door to measure air leaks, or a thermal camera to show where heat escapes. Most give you a written report: what to do, and in what order.
There are a few kinds. A general assessment gives you a plan for the whole house. A Home Energy Rating gives the house a star rating under NatHERS. Air leakage testing and thermal imaging look at one problem in detail.

Home Energy Rating assessments
The government rating for a home that already exists, run under NatHERS. A star rating for the house you live in, rather than one for a house on a plan.
Home Energy Rating (NatHERS) for new homes
A star rating for a home that is still on paper. The assessor works from the plans for a new build or a major renovation, usually for the building permit, so nobody needs to visit a house that does not exist yet.
Draught and air leakage testing
A blower door measures how leaky the house actually is, so sealing work can be checked rather than hoped at.
Thermal imaging and insulation scans
A camera that shows exactly where the heat is leaving, which is rarely where people assume.
