Getting your home assessed

An assessment tells you where your money is going before you spend any more of it. These guides cover what an assessor looks at, and what you can check yourself first for nothing.

What’s involved in having your home assessed

These are the main things an assessor can look at before you spend money on anything else. You can also use these categories to find businesses that specialise in the work you need.

01 Home energy assessments and auditsSomeone walks the house and tells you what to do first, in what order and what it is worth, usually as a written report you can hand to whoever does the work.
02 Home Energy Rating assessmentsThe government rating for a home that already exists, run under NatHERS. A star rating for the house you live in, rather than one for a house on a plan.
03 Home Energy Rating (NatHERS) for new homesA star rating for a home that is still on paper. The assessor works from the plans for a new build or a major renovation, usually for the building permit, so nobody needs to visit a house that does not exist yet.
04 Draught and air leakage testingA blower door measures how leaky the house actually is, so sealing work can be checked rather than hoped at.
05 Thermal imaging and insulation scansA camera that shows exactly where the heat is leaving, which is rarely where people assume.

When you know which upgrade you need, find businesses that specialise in that work and service your area.
