A home energy rating gives your existing home a star rating for how well it holds heat and stays cool. It’s a simple way to see how your house compares, and what would improve it.
A common sign
“How energy efficient is our house, really?”
About home Energy Rating assessments
A home energy rating for an existing home is done under NatHERS, the Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme. An assessor visits, measures the house and models how much energy it would need to stay comfortable, then gives it a star rating.
The more stars, the less heating and cooling the home is likely to need. The report can also show how upgrades like insulation or better windows would change the rating.

Comparing your home with others
A rating models the building itself, not how you use it. Two families in the same house will still have different bills.

More in energy assessments
A professional home energy assessment shows where your house loses heat and power, so you don’t waste money on upgrades you don’t need.

Someone walks the house and tells you what to do first, in what order and what it is worth, usually as a written report you can hand to whoever does the work.

A star rating for a home that is still on paper. The assessor works from the plans for a new build or a major renovation, usually for the building permit, so nobody needs to visit a house that does not exist yet.

A blower door measures how leaky the house actually is, so sealing work can be checked rather than hoped at.

A camera that shows exactly where the heat is leaving, which is rarely where people assume.
