Building or renovating? A NatHERS assessor rates your home from the plans, usually for your building permit, so you can improve the design before anything is built.
A common sign
“Our builder says we need an energy rating before we can get a permit.”
About home Energy Rating (NatHERS) for new homes
For a new home or major renovation, the assessor uses your plans to model how much heating and cooling the home will need, based on its design, materials, windows and orientation. The result is a star rating.
This is the best time to make changes. Moving a window, adding shade or choosing better glazing is cheap on paper and expensive once the house is built.

Major renovations and extensions
Bring the assessor in early, before the design is locked in. It’s much easier to improve a rating on paper than on site.

A professional home energy assessment shows where your house loses heat and power, so you don’t waste money on upgrades you don’t need.

Someone walks the house and tells you what to do first, in what order and what it is worth, usually as a written report you can hand to whoever does the work.

The government rating for a home that already exists, run under NatHERS. A star rating for the house you live in, rather than one for a house on a plan.

A blower door measures how leaky the house actually is, so sealing work can be checked rather than hoped at.

A camera that shows exactly where the heat is leaving, which is rarely where people assume.
