Triple glazed windows have three panes of glass for the coldest rooms and noisiest streets. They’re less common in Australia, so it pays to find someone who has actually fitted them.
A common sign
“Even double glazing doesn’t seem like enough for this room.”
About triple glazed windows
Triple glazing adds a third pane of glass, and a second gap, to slow heat loss and block more noise than double glazing. The frames are heavier, so they need to be built and installed for the extra weight.
It’s most often used in cold climates, near busy roads or under flight paths, and in homes built to very high energy standards. For many Australian homes, good double glazing is enough, so ask an installer whether triple glazing is worth it for you.

Homes built to high energy standards
Ask how many triple glazed jobs the installer has done. It’s still uncommon here, and experience with the heavier frames matters.

Not sure where to start?
Don’t waste money on upgrades you don’t need. A professional home energy assessment shows where your house loses heat and power, so your budget goes where it makes the biggest difference.

More in windows and glazing
Single glazing is where a great deal of your heating escapes. These trades retrofit the windows you already have, or replace them properly.

The warmest frame of the common options, and the quietest. A full replacement rather than a retrofit.

Slim frames with a thermal break. Common where the look of the original windows has to be kept.

A second pane fitted inside the window you already have. Far cheaper than replacement, and it works on heritage frames.

Double glazed glass fitted into the frames you already have. The frames stay and only the glass changes.

Not every glazing job is double glazing. Rotten frames, jammed sashes and doors that never sealed properly.
