A home battery stores the solar power you don’t use during the day so you can use it at night. Set up the right way, it can also keep the lights on during a blackout.
A common sign
“Our solar makes heaps of power during the day, but we’re still buying it at night.”
About home battery installation
A battery charges from your solar panels during the day and powers your home in the evening. It can be added to an existing solar system or installed with a new one.
Not every battery keeps the power on in a blackout. That needs backup wiring, which has to be planned at installation. Battery size should match how much power you use in the evening, not just the size of your solar.
Buying power at night despite having solar
Power outages
Getting more out of an existing solar system
Ask whether the battery will power your home in a blackout, and which circuits it will run. Backup isn’t automatic, so it’s worth confirming.

Not sure where to start?
Don’t waste money on upgrades you don’t need. A professional home energy assessment shows where your house loses heat and power, so your budget goes where it makes the biggest difference.

More in solar and batteries
Make your own power, keep the lights on through an outage, and get more out of a system you have already paid for.

Panels, inverter and the wiring to the board. The size that suits you depends on when you actually use power.

Adding panels, replacing an ageing inverter, or fitting a battery to a system that never had one.

Connects your home battery to a virtual power plant, which can pay you for letting the grid draw on it at busy times. Some battery rebates require it, so ask before you choose a battery.

Solar panels, batteries and usually a backup generator, sized to run the home with no grid connection at all. Most common on rural blocks a long way from the poles.

Panel cleaning, output checks and isolator faults. A system quietly underperforming for years is common.
