Heat rises, and in a home without enough ceiling insulation a lot of it goes straight out through the roof. Insulating the ceiling is one of the cheapest ways to make a house warmer in winter and cooler in summer.
A common sign
“We run the heater all day and the house still feels cold.”
About ceiling and roof insulation
Ceiling insulation is a layer of batts or blown-in material laid across the ceiling, between the rooms and the roof. It slows heat escaping in winter and stops the hot roof space heating your rooms in summer.
Many older homes have none, or not enough. A good installer will check what’s already there, choose the right thickness for your climate, and keep insulation a safe distance from downlights and other fittings.
Rooms that won’t stay warm in winter
Hot rooms under the roof in summer
High heating and cooling bills
Insulate before you buy a new heater or air conditioner. A well insulated home can often get by with a smaller system that costs less to run.

Not sure where to start?
Don’t waste money on upgrades you don’t need. A professional home energy assessment shows where your house loses heat and power, so your budget goes where it makes the biggest difference.

More in insulation and draughts
The cheapest work in the house, and the thing to do before you spend money on heating. Start here if the budget is tight.

Older batts settle and thin out. Adding a layer over what is there costs a fraction of a full install.

Blown into the cavity of an existing wall without taking the room apart. Harder than a ceiling and worth more in a brick veneer.

For a house on stumps with a cold floor in July. Fitted from below, so the floor coverings stay where they are.

Doors, windows, wall vents and the gaps around them. The cheapest work in the building and the fastest to feel.

Old, damp, rodent damaged or non compliant material out first. Nothing new performs on top of it.
