Draught and weather sealing

Gaps around doors, windows, vents and fittings let warm air out and cold air in. Sealing them is one of the cheapest upgrades in the house, and one of the quickest to feel.

A common sign

“I can feel a breeze in the lounge even with every door shut.”
That’s a draught, and most homes have plenty of them. Sealing the gaps keeps the air you’ve paid to heat or cool inside.

About draught and weather sealing

Close the gaps you can feel.

Draughts come from gaps around doors and windows, open wall vents, exhaust fans without dampers, old downlights and the places where pipes and cables come through. Each gap may be small, but together they can let a lot of air through.

A draught sealing specialist finds these gaps and seals them with weather strips, door seals, covers and fillers. A good one also knows which vents must stay open, especially if you have gas heating, which needs fresh air to run safely.

Worth knowing

A sealed home needs good ventilation in bathrooms and kitchens to keep moisture under control. Ask about exhaust fans while you’re sealing.
